Beard Products and Maintenance
Beard care is relatively easy but extremely important if you want to grow a good full beard that doesn’t itch and isn’t just a wild mass growing from your chin. Most beard care companies will sell kits that are “Absolutely Essential” to growing a big full beard usually containing multiple serums for thickness or volume, beard growth vitamins, daytime and nighttime oils, along with a plethora of “follicle activators”, usually for a “great deal” around a couple hundred dollars. The truth is all you need to promote healthy beard growth is taking care of your skin beneath the beard and the beard hair itself.
An important piece of your beard maintenance plan should be a beard comb and brush. There are a ton of different combs and brushes out there so let me shed some light on the best options out there. Don’t get tricked into paying a ton of money for any “Premium materials”. The best materials for beard combs are wood, bone, horn, and rubber. These products are usually made by hand and have higher quality materials with better workmanship. These higher quality combs will have smooth comb teeth and won’t snag and damage your beard. You want to avoid plastic and metal combs for beard hair. The coarse plastic teeth usually have small cuts or snags that can catch and potentially damage beard hairs, and metal can be sharp and also can cause static buildup in your beard.
As far as beard brushes go, you’re going to want to pick something with animal hair bristles. Boar’s hair and Horsehair are the two most popular choices. Using brushes with natural hair bristles such as these have many benefits. Boars and horses naturally secrete sebum just like humans so the bristles move the oils through your beard evenly and naturally because they were designed to move these types of oil. Boar hair is more firm than horse hair, so it is better at detangling and penetrating through thicker, rough beard hairs. Horsehair is softer and easier on your skin so if you have a thinner shorter beard this would be a great option.
In the end it all comes down to preference. The materials, size, shape, and styling are all factors that you need to take into consideration while choosing these products. If you travel a lot you should probably stick to a smaller or travel size brush/comb set. If you have a long thick beard you’re going to need a long, stiff brush to take care of it. The best thing you can do is go out and see what you can find that fits your personal styling. You should be able to find beard combs and brushes at most stores with a decent men’s hygiene/grooming section (I use a Cremo wooden comb and boar’s hair brush that I found at target).
Unfortunately at the time of me writing this blog we don’t offer any Brushes or Combs through our store but I highly recommend the Cremo brush and comb.
Make sure you check out our store if you’re looking for beard oil or balm, all of our products are made right here in Miles City Montana and use high quality ingredients!
