Beard Care Basics Part II
Well now that we have the basics of choosing the right Beard Oil and Balm figured out, let’s move on to applying it to your beard. You are going to want to start with a clean beard, slightly damp or dry would be preferred.
I comb my beard out before I add any product to make sure that there are no tangles or snags, but that is just my preference. There are a couple of main ways to apply to beard oil, you can use the dropper to pour it into your hand and then rub the oil in, or you can apply the oil directly into your beard with the dropper. If you have a thicker beard you might want to try applying it directly into your beard so you can make sure that the oil gets to your skin. Either method works fine as long as you make sure that the oil reaches your skin because that is the purpose of the oil. It moisturizes your skin to eliminate the itch and the excess oil that you apply helps to soften and tame the rest of your beard. After the oil is applied, move on to a finishing product like beard balm. Run your thumb nail across the balm and curl a small roll of balm onto your nail. Rub the balm into your palms and then apply to your entire beard. Make sure to work it into your beard hair as well as you can to keep your beard moisturized and to help keep it tame. After you work the balm into your beard, I would recommend combing your beard into the style and shape that you want it in for the day, now that it has balm in it, it should stay in that position and be easier to work with throughout the day.
There are a few other factors to consider when oiling your beard as well. The climate that you are in, the time of year, and the thickness of your beard and how long you have been oiling it can change the amount of oil and balm that you might need daily. If you have a thick beard and you are just starting to oil it the oil may soak in faster than if you have been oiling it for a long time so it may already feel dry by mid-day. There is definitely nothing wrong with applying oil or balm more than once in a day. I find that when I’m working outside in the wind, or during the winter my beard tends to dry out faster due to the dryer air and I’ll apply oil again in the afternoon to keep my skin moisturized and to keep my beard from going crazy.
Ultimately it comes down to personal preference and how much oil you want to use. It’s your beard and how you take care of it is up to you. Don’t let the itch stop you from growing a beard. Get some oil, grow it out, and SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP!
